Springbank - Single Malt - Aged 25 yrs - Cask strength 54% - Limited Edition in numbered bottles

€2,950.00

Springbank is a name that evokes memories of the most unforgettable, gently smoky, incredibly complex drams for many whisky lovers.

Founded back in 1828 century and located in Campbeltown, Kintyre, Scotland, it is the only distillery that is still, to this day, owned by the same family. Producing a single malt that is lightly peated in their kiln and distilled 2.5 times, it is made entirely in-house, employing traditional skills that have been passed down from one generation to the next.

It is renowned for being a wholly in-house operation, from malting to mashing, from distillation to bottling. The distillery uses traditional floor maltings and sources its barley from local farms.

Swarte Swaen has procured several bottles from a cask strength (54%) limited edition bottling of a 1998 Refill Sherry Hogshead Cask (Spingbank cask 111) yielding 98 bottles in total, bottled at Springbank.

Nose:

Classy and deep with plenty of mineral notes: limestone, chalk, empty mussel shells and some citrus, hints of tobacco, olive oil and of course peat. Beautiful layering and complexity.

Palate:

A rich palate with the distinct peaty edge coming through now, followed by mentholated notes and spiced with coffee beans, pepper, dark bitter chocolate, aniseed licorice, lemon peel and a hint of almonds.

Finish:

A smooth long finish with more peat, coffee ground, smokey woody notes and a little bit of ginger and nutmeg.

Conclusion:

An absolute diamond of a whisky from Springbank with beautifully subdued sherry notes as it has matured in a refill barrel. It takes you along on a journey past citrus fruit, peat and exotic spices. Smoky and spicey yet with delicately sweet hints of warm fudge.
